Jiangsu Gong-chang Roll Co. Ltd is a newly formed Chinese-Foreign Joint-Venture Company contributed by the ex-Yixing Gongchang Roll Co., Hangzhou Iron & Steel Group Co., and Davy Roll of Union Electric Steel of USA.

The company is located in the central area of Yangtze River Delta economic zone, and situated in well economically developed pottery city of Yixing. It is a factory specializing in the production of metallurgical rolls for iron and steel industry.

With 30 years of roll production and development history, the ex Yixing Gong-chang Roll Co become a member of China's national spare parts supply/service center for the metallurgical industry in the early 80s.

Now, the annual production capability for conventional and strip mill rolls reach 50,000 tonnes (of which 20,000 tonnes are for conventional mill rolls and 30,000 tonnes are for strip mill rolls).

The registered capital of the company is RMB100 million with total assets amounting to RMB200 million.

In order to speed up the stride development of the roll-making technology and production scale to join in the international advanced roll makers and meet the rising domestic demand for strip mill/section mill and special steel mill rolls, the company introduced a complete set of advanced strip mill rolls manufacturing process and technology and the software of roll-making process control from the well-known Roll Manufacturer - Davy Roll of Union Electric Steel of USA.

The total investment for the Strip Mill Roll production facility is estimated at RMB280 million, with its initial stage of the Hot Strip Mill Roll production facility estimated at RMB180 million.

The new foundry and workshops covering an area of 30,000m2 aimed for production of hot strip mill rolls of different material grade - high speed steel, enhanced high chromium iron, high chromium iron, enhanced AIC and conventional AIC.

In the meantime, the company has intended to introduce international advanced cold strip mill roll production technology and facility for development of cold strip mill rolls to meet Chinese Iron and Steel Industry requirement.

The company situated on a land area of 250,000m2 with its built up area of 60,000m2 consisting of 500 staffs.

The Old and New Roll-Making facility are:

•   Medium frequency melting furnaces of 20t, 15t, 10t, 8t, 6t, 3t and 1t.
•   Horizontal spun cast machine of 500 series, 600 series and 900 series.
•   Vertical spun cast machine of 600 series and 1200 series.
•   11 high/low temp. numeric controlled electrical resistor heat treatment furnaces.
•   Advanced chill coating and shot-blast machine.
•   18 imported and domestic large NC lathe, grinding, milling and boring machine.
•   More than 100 special roll lathe and conventional lathe.
•   More than 60 overhead cranes of 80t, 50t, 30t, 20t, and 10t.
•   One 35kV electrical transformation station.

The company central laboratory covers 800m2 and equipped with imported direct-reading spectrometer, microscope, hardness tester and domestic made advanced tensile test machine, ultrasonic machine, chemical analysis means, residual stress tester and retained austenite analyzer etc.

Advanced computer automation controlling and monitoring are adopted for melting process, spin casting and roll heat treatment etc. so the homogeneity of production process and quality are guaranteed fundamentally.

The company adopts grooved mould casting, large/medium horizontal and vertical spin casting process and technology.

The majority roll varieties are:

•   Rolls for bar mill and wire-rod mill.
•   Rolls for section mills and narrow hot strip mills.
•   Work rolls for hot medium plate mill.
•   Work rolls for hot strip mill.
•   Rolls for Beam Mill.
•   Rolls for nonferrous mills.

The majority roll materials are:

•   Ordinary alloy, Medium alloy and Pearlitic/Accicular cast iron roll series.
•   Alloy steel, Adamite and Graphitic cast steel roll series.
•   HSS, enhanced high Cr/AIC and high Cr/AC duplex spun cast roll series.

The conventional mill rolls are manufactured by complying to customer's specification and requirement. Hot strip mill rolls are manufactured by complying to Davy Roll's technical specifications and requirements. The company has complied to the quality inspection and sample test carried out by the State and Jiangsu Province in the year 1993, 1994, 1998, 2000 and 2001.

The company being one of the first Chinese Roll Manufacturers that obtained the Government-Issued Roll Production License as well as ISO9002 Authentication Certificate issued by the China Metallurgical Industry Quality Authentication Center in 1998. Within the same year, it has been awarded the "Recommended Products" award by Handan Steel and China Metallurgical Daily.

The company has been awarded Customer-Satisfied Products and Company by Jiangsu Provincial Quality Association.

The Cr-Mo-V SG semi chilled rolls have been awarded Jiangsu's Good New Products Golden award. Cast iron straightening rolls have been given Jiangsu's Good New Products Certificate.

Rolls produced by Jiangsu Gong-chang are mainly sold to China's large-medium scale state-owned iron and steel companies. Sales network covers more than 20 provinces and regions in China, as well as the export market in countries and regions in South East Asia, America etc.

For the time being, the company has established its sales bases for Maanshan Steel, Bao Steel group, Handan Steel, Tangshan Steel, Laiwu Steel, Anshan Steel, Hangzhou Steel, Shuicheng Steel, Anyang Steel, Nanjing Steel, Chongqing Steel, Xianhua Steel and so on.

The company set up "Gongchang Roll Research Institute" and "Roll Inspection and Research Development Center" and established long-term technical development cooperation with Beijing iron and steel research general institute and South-East University etc.

Special technical talents are constantly introduced into the company, with new technical development and innovation system has been established in the company.

Over the past 30 years, major development has been achieved and the main technical/economic targets ranks in the front among Chinese roll manufacturers. The current conventional mill roll sales rank in the first top three in China.

The company has been awarded consecutive AAA crediting enterprise and Jiangsu's honest enterprise.
